Since ancient Vedic times, the potential of turmeric to act as a flavouring and colouring agent, for cosmetic purposes as well as in the cure of an innumerable number of diseases has been realized.
The following article discusses a research study conducted recently showing extraordinary improvements among the patients suffering from the Alzheimer’s disease who were made to consume less than a gram of turmeric every day.
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder which causes short-term memory loss, inability to remember events, mood swings, behavioural issues etc., thereby affecting the person’s daily functioning and eventually leading to death.
A 2007 research predicts that by 2050, 1 in every 85 individuals would be suffering from AD (4 times the present number which was 26 million in 2006) .
Since the conventional drugs like donepezil have reported several adverse effects, experiments are conducted to test the efficacy of natural, plant-based products like turmeric against the disease.
Turmeric for Alzheimer’s Disease
A 2012 research study published in the journal Ayu proves the outstanding effects of turmeric in improving the cognitive decline and behavioural symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.
The research comprised of 3 patients severely suffering from the Alzheimer’s disease and exhibiting problems of irritability, anxiety, apathy, agitation etc.
Two of them also suffered from urinary incontinence and wonderings. The patients were administered with turmeric capsules.
Remarkable results in terms of decrease in behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), the burden on caregivers and improvement in mini-mental state examination (MMSE) scores were observed after 12 weeks.
No side effects and re- exacerbation symptoms were reported within a year of study.
While the MMSE result was up by 5 points in one patient, the other two patients came to recognize their families within a year of turmeric treatment. A remarkable result indeed!
We, therefore conclude that turmeric, a readily available spice is highly effective against the Alzheimer’s disease with no side effects.
It successfully causes the degeneration of Alzheimer causing amyloid plague.
Its anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, anti-cytotoxic, neurorestorative and metal chelating properties, make it a better medicine than the commercially available Donepezil drug against the Alzheimer’s disease.
