Turmeric, the golden spice without which any kitchen is incomplete, has been used for providing a yellow colour and a beautiful aroma to the curry since ancient times.
Its major bioactive compound is Curcumin which is present in its underground stem.
It exhibits a range of therapeutic properties.
It helps in relieving inflammation by inhibiting the expression of inflammatory interleukins, TNF-alpha, cycloxygenase, lipoxygenase and NF-kb.
It relieves the patient from oxidative stress by scavenging the reactive oxygen species and thus, helps in curing Cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease etc.
It also proves to be beneficial against a number of pathogenic microorganisms. It acts against viruses like influenza virus , HIV etc., bacteria like staphylococcus aureus, bacillus subtilis etc. and fungi like Cryptococcus neoformans and Candida albicans etc.
Anti-Bacterial Activity Of Curcumin And Its Combination With Amoxicillin Antibiotic
Curcumin inhibits the growth of a large number of bacterial strains.
To validate its antibacterial properties, a group of scientists from NMIMS University, Mumbai performed an experiment.
The aim of the experiment was to bring into light, the antibacterial activity of Curcumin-amoxicillin combo so that less amount of amoxicillin is required at the time of disease to prevent antibiotic resistance in bacteria.
They employed the pour plate technique to check the extent of inhibition caused by the following bacterial strains-
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Escherichia coli
- Proteus vulgaris
- Salmonella typhi
In pour plate technique for checking the anti-microbial activity of a substance, circular zones of inhibition are formed around that substance indicating the absence of microbial growth.
In the experiment conducted, the researchers found that both Curcumin and amoxicillin inhibit the growth of bacteria. But, the microbial activity of amoxicillin decreases significantly when it is used in combination with Curcumin.
Turmeric is an important spice and a very useful therapeutic.
It exhibits powerful antibacterial activity. It can thus, be highly beneficial in fending off a number of diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria like typhoid caused by Salmonella typhi.
The research is a proof of its anti-bacterial properties. It inhibited the growth of bacteria both alone as well as in combination with an antibiotic like Amoxicillin.
However, it was found that anti-microbial activity of amoxicillin lowered significantly when used in combination with Curcumin.
Hence, this requires more extensive research and experimentation.
